To ensure you receive the best care, LIFE Psychology + Counselling endeavours to have one of our Psychologists answer all enquiries. We will answer any question you may have and may ask a few questions about your difficulties. This will help us match you to a Psychologist. If we do not feel we are the best people to help with your particular situation we will try to give you the contact details of a more suitable therapist.
WHEN SHOULD YOU SEEK COUNSELLING ASSISTANCE FROM A PSYCHOLOGIST?
People seek counselling for a variety of reasons and at different stages in their lives. There is no set rule or structure for when someone should visit a psychologist. Some of the most common reasons include:
LENGTH OF SESSIONS
Depending on the nature of your visit, sessions generally run between 30-60 minutes. Initial consultation and assessments may run slightly longer.
COST OF SESSIONS
The majority of our psychologists in Parramatta offer Medicare or public health rebates to cover the cost of sessions. LIFE Psychology offers BULK BILLING (that is, no gap fees) for low-income earners, students, pensioners and unemployed jobseekers.
To receive Medicare rebates, you will need to obtain a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP. Presentation of this plan and referral entitles you to up to 10 sessions per calendar year.
For injured persons receiving Worker’s Compensation, you may be eligible for funding of your treatment program as long as approval is given by your treating doctor and insurer. Our Psychologists are all accredited Workcover providers.
THE INITIAL SESSION
In the first session, your Psychologist will conduct a thorough assessment of your current life situation, symptoms, issues and related factors. This is important to enable our Psychologists to help you in the most effective and efficient way. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have or discuss any concerns.
We understand you may feel uncomfortable talking to a stranger about personal things. At LIFE Psychology + Counselling our Psychologists in Parramatta take a relaxed and supportive approach to put you at ease. We also adhere to strict ethical guidelines for confidentiality and respect for your privacy.
LENGTH OF THERAPY
Although most people feel the benefits of treatment after a few sessions, the number of sessions required with one of our Psychologists depends on several factors. Typically, people require between 5 and 15 sessions. After the initial assessment you will be advised as to the number and frequency of sessions recommended.
To help you get the most out of your appointments, the progress of your therapy will periodically be reviewed with reference to your goals.
TYPES OF TREATMENT
At LIFE Psychology we use a variety of evidence-based therapies matched to your individual needs or preferences. These include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal therapy, Schema Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Mindfulness Techniques.
Our therapies are Active and Practical. We do more than just listen to your difficulties. Together with your Psychologist you will come to an understanding of your issues, what has caused them, and what is maintaining them. We will work on practical strategies and skills so you can overcome your difficulties, manage any recurrence and enhance your life. We will often recommend exercises or provide reading material for you between sessions that will maximise your progress.
